20121108-ladies-team-1The Ladies Quadrangular 2012 took place on 12-13 October in Nottingham. In the absence of a ladies team from the Police and the Fire Service we found ourselves in more of a tripod, facing formidable opponents from the Combined Services and Nottingham Squash Club.

Our first match saw us take on Nottingham ladies, newcomers to the Quadrangular who sportingly put up a team. An unknown entity, they fielded a strong side and unfortunately we were no match for them in the end. The team performed well and some good squash was played by all, but Nottingham managed to triumph 4-1.

The warm-up match over, the ladies were keen to get back on court and reverse our fortunes against the Combined Services team. Our new captain, Louise Clark, playing 1st string, went on first and set the standard, overcoming a tough opponent to win 3.0. Jackie Codman, at 2, had a battle on her hands from the first point, and just lost the first game 15-17. Not to be outdone, she fought back and held her nerve to take the win at 3-2. Ruth Kneeshaw had a similarly tough game at 4th string, but she too was victorious and won 3-1. That just left Helen Midgley and Pat Comer, at 3 and 5, who both gave stirling performances, winning 3-0 and securing a convincing 5-0 victory. We certainly fared better than the men did in their Combined Services match, which might have had something to do with the fact that the ladies can handle their drink a little better…

The ladies came a respectable second overall and it was a promising start to the season. We turned up looking stylish and professional in our new kit…although there were a few sizing issues, with Louise’s skirt falling round her ankles. Luckily a couple of the men have sportingly offered to wear the skirts at the next match so they don’t go to waste. We look forward to the show at the next fixture.

A huge thanks goes to Nottingham club for consistently providing such an excellent venue and facilities. Also thanks to Linda for her brilliant organisational skills and ever tireless efforts at keeping us all in line.
